Laminar flow workbenches

Laminar flow workbenches ensure particle-free working conditions and protect sensitive products from contamination. They are used wherever sterile conditions are required – for example, in the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, medical technology or electronics manufacturing. FASTER develops laminar flow workbenches in accordance with international cleanroom standards such as ISO 14644 and GMP Class A. The systems are available as vertical or horizontal laminar flow workbenches and can be flexibly adapted to laboratory and production environments.

What is a laminar flow workbench?

A laminar flow workbench is a specially designed cleanroom workstation that creates a controlled, particle-free environment directly within the work area. The air is first purified by highly effective filter units and then directed across the work surface in a uniform, laminar flow. This continuous airflow ensures that particles, dust and potential contaminants are consistently removed from the work zone.

This principle creates a stable clean air zone that reliably protects sensitive products, materials or samples in particular from contamination. The technology is primarily used in situations where even the smallest contaminants could compromise the quality or outcome of a process.

Typical features of laminar flow workbenches include a uniform, low-turbulence airflow that ensures a defined flow direction without turbulence. The air is purified via high-performance HEPA or ULPA filter systems, which reliably trap even microscopically small particles.

ISO Class 5 clean air conditions are generally achieved within the work area, which means a very low particle concentration and thus meets the highest cleanliness requirements. Another important aspect is the significantly reduced particle load throughout the entire work area, which creates reproducible and safe working conditions.

In addition to technical cleanliness, ergonomics also plays an important role: modern laminar flow workbenches are designed to enable comfortable and efficient working over extended periods.

Laminar flow workbenches are primarily used to protect products and are employed wherever sterile or ultra-clean conditions are required – for example, in pharmaceutical production, microbiology, cell culture technology or for sensitive assembly and testing work in industry.

Vertical and horizontal laminar flow workbenches

Various laminar flow concepts are available depending on the application. The choice depends in particular on the workflow, space constraints, ergonomic requirements and the required cleanliness conditions. Modern systems – such as those offered by manufacturers like FASTER Air – are based on highly efficient HEPA or ULPA filtration systems, which enable a defined, particle-free working environment and thus safeguard sensitive processes in laboratory and production settings.

  • Vertical laminar flow workbench

In vertical laminar flow workbenches, such as the FlowFAST V model, the filtered air flows from top to bottom across the work surface. This design reduces cross-contamination and is particularly suitable for applications with high cleanliness requirements.

    Typical areas of application:

    • Pharmaceutical production
    • Cell culture work
    • Medical applications
    • Cleanroom production

    Advantages:

    • Reduced risk of contamination
    • Compact design
    • Flexible integration into existing workspaces
  • Horizontal laminar flow workbench

In our FlowFAST H product, a horizontal laminar flow workbench, the filtered air flows from the rear to the front across the work surface. This design is particularly suitable for applications where a uniform airflow is required.

    Typical areas of application:

    • Electronics manufacturing
    • Optical components
    • Precision assembly
    • Semiconductor manufacturing

    Advantages:

    • Uniform airflow
    • Large work surface
    • Optimal product protection
  • Mobile Laminar Flow Workbench

For flexible applications, FASTER offers mobile laminar flow workbenches, such as the LAF Trolley. These provide cleanroom conditions directly at the point of use and are particularly suitable for production environments with varying requirements.

    Typical areas of application:

    • Flexible cleanroom production
    • Clinical applications
    • Quality control
    • Production lines

In which industries are laminar flow workbenches typically used?

Laminar flow workbenches are used wherever the highest levels of cleanliness and reliable protection of products against airborne particles are required. They create controlled working conditions and support safe, reproducible processes in sensitive production and laboratory environments.

Typical sectors include, amongst others:

  • Pharmaceutical industry – for sterile manufacturing and filling processes
  • Biotechnology – for cell cultures and sensitive laboratory work
  • Medical technology – for contamination-free assembly and testing
  • Microelectronics – to protect sensitive components from particles
  • Food industry – for hygiene-critical production stages
  • Optics and precision manufacturing – for the processing of highly sensitive components

Wherever even the smallest particles can affect product quality, laminar flow systems ensure a stable, clean working environment and help to maintain high quality and cleanroom standards. Frequently asked questions about laminar flow workbenches

  • When do you need a laminar flow workbench?

Laminar flow workbenches are used whenever a controlled, particle-free working environment is required. They support safe and reproducible processes in laboratories, pharmaceutical production, microtechnology and in all areas where product or sample purity is crucial.

Typical applications include the sterile handling of sensitive materials, the preparation of culture media and the assembly of sensitive components. A laminar flow workbench is particularly necessary when sterile conditions must be created, but the focus is exclusively on product protection and no additional personal protection against biological or chemical hazards is required.

  • What filters are used?

High-performance HEPA or ULPA filters, which have been tested in accordance with international ISO standards, are used. These filters reliably remove even the smallest particles and aerosols from the air, thereby ensuring a consistently high level of air purity.

Continuous filtration creates a defined clean air zone within the workbench, in which the air flows evenly and with minimal turbulence across the work area. This significantly reduces the risk of product contamination.

  • What is the difference between vertical and horizontal?

The difference lies in the direction of the air flow. In vertical laminar flow systems, the filtered air flows from top to bottom into the work area and is then extracted through openings at the front.

In horizontal laminar flow workbenches, on the other hand, the purified air is directed from the rear of the workbench directly and evenly across the entire work surface towards the operator.

Both systems produce stable, laminar flow conditions, but differ in terms of ergonomics, scope of application and airflow direction.

  • What cleanroom class is achieved with a laminar flow workbench?

Laminar flow workbenches are generally designed to achieve ISO Class 5 cleanroom standards within the working area. This high cleanliness class corresponds to very low particle concentrations and is particularly important for sensitive applications in research, the pharmaceutical industry and manufacturing.

The continuous laminar air flow ensures that particles are immediately carried out of the working area, thereby creating a stable and reproducible clean air zone.

  • Does a laminar flow workbench provide protection against biological hazards?

No, laminar flow workbenches are not designed to protect the user from biological hazards such as bacteria, viruses or fungal spores. Their primary purpose is to protect the product, i.e. to prevent contamination of the material being worked on by particles from the ambient air.

For work involving biological or infectious substances, biological safety cabinets are required instead, as these also provide active protection for both the user and the environment.
