Information on
Decontamination

Cleanrooms, isolators and safety cabinets must be decontaminated at regular intervals for the safety of laboratory and service staff. Generally, H2O2 generators or formalin devices are used, whereby microbiological decontamination with H2O2 generators is particularly widespread.

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a largely stable liquid compound of hydrogen and oxygen and a strong oxidising agent that reacts violently with substances such as copper, brass or potassium iodide. Due to these properties, H2O2 is used for decontamination and sterilisation.

In the food industry, cartons, cups, bottles and films are sterilised with a 35% hydrogen peroxide solution before foodstuffs such as drinks, milk, dairy products, sauces or soups are filled in aseptic filling systems. Another area of application is the use of gaseous H2O2 for cleanroom decontamination. For this purpose, a 35 per cent solution is vaporised in a special apparatus and blown into the area to be decontaminated (cleanroom, isolator, etc.). The broad spectrum of effectiveness of H2O2, the environmental compatibility and the simple technical realisation are the reasons for the widespread use of this method.

Formaldehyde / Formalin

The toxic chemical compound methanal is usually referred to as formaldehyde. The correct IUPAC name methanal is derived from methane by adding the suffix -al for aldehydes. As an aqueous, approximately 40 per cent solution, formaldehyde is known as formalin. Formaldehyde is still an effective component for surface disinfection. The nebulisation of formaldehyde for decontamination is a recognised procedure, particularly in the medical field, but is not without risk due to the toxic, carcinogenic and sensitising potential of aldehyde.

Decontamination as a service

At FASTER, we carry out the microbiological decontamination of cleanrooms, isolators and safety cabinets using state-of-the-art H2O2 generators or formalin devices - as a separate service or as part of a maintenance contract, depending on requirements.
